Job Summary/Basic Functions

The University of Mary Washington has an exciting internal opportunity for a Director of Financial Aid. This role is responsible for the overall administration of financial aid programs while providing effective leadership and management to ensure compliance with all federal, state and institutional financial aid program policies and regulations. While this individual will develop policies and procedures that will govern the Office of Financial Aid, they will also develop and execute the financial aid strategy to maximize new and continuing student enrollment. This individual will advise senior leaders on new regulatory requirements, trends, and best practices, while collaborating with colleagues across campus including Finance, Advancement, Admissions, Business Services, and other offices co-located in the Student Services Center of Lee Hall to ensure a student-centered, customer service approach. In addition to maintaining strong operations in the unit, the Financial Aid Director must be able to take the lead on data analysis and strategic projections regarding budgets, enrollments, and the strategic use of financial aid.

Required KSAs/Competencies/Qualifications

  • Knowledge of federal and state financial aid programs and regulations.
  • Must be able to take the lead on data analysis and strategic projections regarding budgets, enrollments, and the strategic use of financial aid.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work with a wide range of constituencies, both on- and off-campus.
  • Ability to provide/lead continual training and education of staff.
  • Ability to promote a student-centered, customer service ethos.
  • Ability to exercise strong analytical and information technology skills to perform statistical analysis and prepare reports.
  • Understanding of FERPA regulations and ability to manage confidential information.
  • Must be available to work evenings and weekends and to travel, as needed.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office and email, social networking and applications as required.

Required Experience:

At least five years of progressive experience in financial aid at the supervisory level at a post-secondary institution which would include:

  1. experience with both the strategic and operational aspects of higher-education financial aid;
  2. supervisory and managerial experience in a professional office environment; and
  3. the demonstrated ability to work effectively with various university constituencies in a high- visibility, high-stakes financial aid and admissions environment.

Proven track record as it relates to keeping staff motivated and working at optimum levels, especially at peak times, and establish a customer service-focused culture, balanced with accurate processing.

 

Required Education:

  • Bachelor's degree 

Additional Considerations:

  • Proficient in student information systems (i.e. Banner, People Soft, etc.)
  • Ability to make full use of systems capabilities which allows for auto packaging, generating missing items letters, exception reporting, and student access via a portal for self-service.
  • Must have ability to not only be comfortable navigating the database, but also designing processes, data queries, and maintaining system integrity.
  • Master's degree in a field associated with the responsibilities of the office.
  • Experience with Banner and ERMS.
  • Seven or more years of progressive experience in financial aid at the supervisory level at a post-secondary institution.
