Job Summary/Basic Functions

The University of Mary Washington has an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Senior Security Guard. Key job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist in supporting the department’s police / public safety programs at all University of Mary Washington campus locations.
  • Provide safety and security to students, faculty and staff in a professional, courteous manner through proactive foot and vehicle patrols, positive community engagement, and use of modern crime prevention techniques.
  • Maintain order and uphold the image and respect of all university community members through enforcement of university policies and crime prevention practices.

This position is required to work shift work (24 hour scheduling / Essential Personnel) and may be assigned to any of several university properties.

This is a part-time, wage position and is not eligible for fringe benefits.

Required KSAs/Competencies/Qualifications

  • Considerable working knowledge of campus safety and security concepts, principles, procedures and techniques.
  • Exceptional of customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated skills in the use of security vehicles, communication equipment, alarm systems, and other types of security equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow and give oral and written instructions, meet physical demands of the position, to react appropriately in routine and emergency situations, to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with a diverse population, to gather information and write factual reports, and to explain and ensure compliance with policies, rules, and regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement security policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain quality customer service ability and effective interpersonal communication skills while utilizing conflict resolution methods.
  • Must be US citizen.
  • Must be over 18 years of age.
  • Must not have any convictions for domestic violence or active/pending protective orders.

 

Required Experience:

  • Previous experience in military service or law enforcement or campus security.

 

Required Education and Licensure:

  • High School diploma or equivalent training and experience.
  • Current certification as a campus security officer as mandated by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) or the ability to quickly obtain re-certification through VA DCJS in-service/waiver process.

Additional Considerations:

  • Previous years of experience or training in Enforcement/Security in a campus public safety or security department that practiced community policing oriented service.
  • First Aid, CPR and AED training certification.
  • Law Enforcement/Security experience in a public service community policing oriented organization.
  • Basic skills in the operation of personal computers, records management systems, and understanding of NIMS/ICS.
  • Knowledge of police/security “best practices” and OSHA standards.
  • Current Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Service (VA DCJS) certification as a Campus Security Officer.
