Job Summary/Basic Functions

The assistant director of media and public relations is a primary storyteller for the University of Mary Washington, providing writing and editing expertise to all facets of UMW communications and serving as a content curator for digital and print communications. The position adopts writing styles appropriate for a variety of platforms, and is able to adapt voice and messaging to target specific audiences (including current and prospective students, faculty and staff, and media and other external constituents). Responsibilities of this position range from crafting press releases and newsletters to copy-editing postcards and event notices, from researching and writing news and feature stories for the university’s homepage to posting digital signage, from garnering media mentions to approving calendar entries.

Required Experience:

• Professional experience in the area of communications, publications or media relations
• Experience preparing for and conducting interviews
• Familiarity with writing for the web, especially on the WordPress platform
• Experience producing e-newsletters

Additional Considerations:

• Experience working in higher education preferred
• Familiarity with writing for the web, especially on the WordPress platform preferred
