Title: Laboratory Specialist II

Job Summary/Basic Functions
This laboratory specialist position supports the teaching and research missions of the natural sciences departments. This position's main responsibilities include supporting the academic programs by:
1) operating, maintaining, calibrating, and conducting basic repairs on basic laboratory instruments including (but not limited to) pipettors, pH meters, balances, and microscopes;
2) operating and maintaining highly sophisticated laboratory instruments that require specialized training and/or certification to operate and maintain, including (but not limited to) a transmission electron microscope and two autoclaves, and scheduling and coordinating visits by service technicians when outside expertise is needed;
3) preparing chemical solutions and growth media for teaching labs;
4) receiving and properly distributing and storing live, refrigerated/frozen materials properly, and documenting receipt;
5) receiving and restocking laboratory equipment and supplies, and documenting receipt;
6) caring for live organisms for teaching labs;
7) assisting other staff to maintain chemical and equipment inventories, chemical safety records, and safety equipment in laboratories;
8) occasionally, driving students in University van for short field trips.
Required Experience:
Laboratory experience including chemical handling and use of basic laboratory equipment.
Additional Considerations:
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Transmission microscope calibration and maintenance experience.
- Experience with chemical inventory and management software.
- Familiarity with laboratory equipment and basic repairs.
EDUCATION
Bachelors degree in chemistry, biology, environmental science or related natural sciences field.
Experience
- Prior experience with operation and maintenance of sophisticated, as well as standard, scientific instrumentation.
- Prior experience with handling and maintaining electronic records for chemicals, hazardous materials, gas tanks, and cryogenic liquids.
- Experience driving passenger van.
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION
Transmission electron microscope operation and maintenance certification, or ability to be certified.
Valid driver's license.
