Job Summary/Basic Functions

Reporting to the Vice President for Advancement and Alumni Engagement (AAE), the Assistant Vice President (AVP) for Advancement Services provides leadership for the university’s fundraising and alumni engagement infrastructure. As a member of the AAE senior staff, the AVP serves as a key partner to colleagues within the division and across the university including but not limited to university IT, finance, and the UMW Foundation team. The AVP leads the overall strategy for Advancement Services, Data Insights, Research, and Prospect Management, Data Quality, Donor Stewardship and Engagement and will collaborate with division senior leadership to develop and implement plans for the operational infrastructure of systems, processes, and solutions designed to support long term fundraising and alumni engagement goals. The AVP will assist division leadership to utilize data and analytics to drive fundraising success, especially in the context of UMW’s comprehensive campaign. The AVP will identify opportunities for continuous quality improvements and foster a positive, success oriented, accountable environment leveraging best practices, accountability, and key performance indicators.

The AVP is responsible for the strategic design, development and implementation of operational functions that provide a foundation for Advancement and Alumni Engagement to achieve its goals in fundraising and constituent engagement. They will be charged with aligning business support functions, policies and procedures, and technology infrastructure with the strategies, resources, and priorities of the University. They will build, sustain, encourage, and support productive relationships with and among colleagues and develop and implement policies, practices, and systems in Advancement Operations. This position will advise the Vice President for Advancement and Alumni Engagement regarding vendor and constituent due diligence, information technology and database applications or platforms, staffing and any database-related training needs of the division, and will be a central architect of management information tools that emphasize transparency of individual and team performance.

The AVP will provide day-to-day leadership, management, and direction for a dynamic team of professionals in Advancement Services including: Data Insight, Research, and Prospect Management; Donor Stewardship; Database Management, and Gift Processing and Gifts Receipting. The AVP serves as a key liaison with the UMW Foundation team and other stakeholders to ensure accountability and compliance with federal, state, and other regulatory requirements. The AVP is responsible for all aspects of Advancement’s use of Banner (the current CRM at UMW), and will be a key partner to the VP for Advancement and Alumni Engagement and Executive Director of the UMW Foundation with a potential future database conversion in the next five years. The AVP works in collaboration with members of Advancement and Alumni Engagement Senior Leadership team to recommend appropriate courses of action to demonstrate and sustain a culture of service and business support to enhance engagement and philanthropic giving to the university.

Required Experience:

Minimum of 5 years of professional experience working in fundraising operations, information management, and/or business intelligence, preferably in a nonprofit organization.
Experience managing and leading a team, including mentoring and developing staff, including managing remote team members.

• In-depth knowledge of advancement functions, including fundraising campaigns, preferably within a higher education environment.
• Knowledge of data administration and management functions and practices.
• A keen interest in the Advancement profession and an understanding and appreciation for the importance of philanthropy.
• Commitment to the values of an institution of higher education.
• Ability to think “out-of-the-box” and drive innovative and creative thinking and problem-solving within the team.
• A systems mindset, to finding solutions to complex problems and data.
• Experience with CRM systems (e.g. Banner, Blackbaud, or other similar systems), reporting tools, and data analytics platforms.
