Job Summary/Basic Functions

Reporting to the AVP of Advancement Services and Innovation, the Director of Donor Relations and Stewardship Systems will bring a donor-centered mindset and a passion for sharing the impact of philanthropic giving. The Director will help enhance fundraising and engagement efforts by fostering a culture of donor-focused stewardship and meaningful and long-lasting relationship building that ensures every donor is thanked, appropriately recognized, reported to regularly on their giving in support of the university, and understands the value of their choice to support Mary Washington through philanthropy.

The Director works closely with AAE colleagues, university staff, faculty, administrators, and colleagues at the UMW Foundation to develop and monitor the implementation of a systematic, tailored approach to stewardship and donor engagement activities for strategic impact and coordination aligned with the vision of the University of Mary Washington.

Required KSAs/Competencies/Qualifications

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with attention to detail.
  • Strong project management abilities to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Proficiency with fundraising databases.
  • Knowledge of financial reporting and fund accounting principles.
  • Creative problem-solving and strategic thinking.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality with sensitive donor information.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to build relationships with various stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated understanding of IRS, UPMIFA, and CASE guidelines governing charitable giving.
  • Excellent organizational, multi-tasking, and time management skills with exceptional accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365, Teams, and Adobe InDesign.

 

Required Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in donor relations, stewardship, or a relevant advancement role.
  • Demonstrated experience managing donor funds and gift agreements.

 

Additional Considerations:

  • Experience with Banner.
  • Experience with online donor stewardship and awards management software – specifically Scholar Manager, or similar platforms.
  • Social media, photography, and video recording/editing skills and experience.
  • Master's degree in related field (e.g., Non-profit Management, Communications, Higher Education Administration).
  • Prior experience in higher education advancement.
