Job Summary/Basic Functions

The University of Mary Washington has an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Payroll Accountant. Job duties/responsibilities of the Payroll Accountant include, but are not limited to:

  • Administration of a complex automated payroll operation involving multiple systems, interfaces and reconciliations.
  • Responsible for production of administrative faculty and wage payrolls, associated benefit reconciliations, and preparation of complex financial reports.
  • Ensures compliance with state and federal laws related to Payroll.
  • Interpretation of policy; tracking and resolution of complex issues in regards to Payroll.
  • Provides excellent customer service and support to internal and external customers, especially with automated timekeeping system users.

Required KSAs/Competencies/Qualifications

  • Comprehensive knowledge of payroll, including state and federal laws; regulations concerning payroll and payroll deductions; wage-hour regulations; benefits plans and tax reporting.
  • Working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Knowledge of complex automated financial payroll & accounting systems including system interfaces.
  • Knowledge of FLSA regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze fiscal transactions; track and resolve system data issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform complex reconciliations among multiple, interfacing systems.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise significant judgment in decision making regarding interpretation of rules and regulations.
  • Ability to work effectively in team environment and collaborate to meet inflexible deadlines.
  • Strong organizational, critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  • Accurate data entry and reconciliation of complex, multi-system, payroll function.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel.

 

Required Experience:

  • Experience with financial system including system interfaces. 

 

Additional Considerations:

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field or equivalent training and experience.


EXPERIENCE

  • Experience with system implementation and upgrades, being key member of project team.
  • Experience creating and maintaining procedures for fiscal processes.
  • Payroll experience with Commonwealth of Virginia or Virginia Higher Education.
  • Experience with UKG/Kronos timekeeping, Oracle PeopleSoft applications (Cardinal HCM), or Workday.
  • Experience with multi-state tax and regulatory reporting.
