Job Summary/Basic Functions

The police sergeant position is a first line supervisor position responsible for the guidance, direction and training of a squad of police officers in the performance of their duties. To protect life, property and enforce the rules and regulations of the University of Mary Washington as well as the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia in such a manner that supports the mission of the University. This is a working supervisor position, the sergeant will be required to assist with calls for service. The position will require collateral duties based on the needs of the department.

Required KSAs/Competencies/Qualifications

The Sergeant must have the training necessary to be an effective leader. They must be familiar with Virginia Code, University of Mary Washington policies and procedures and various City of Fredericksburg ordinances. The candidate must be able to give credible and reliable testimony in a court of law.

 

Required Experience:

The Sergeant must have enough experience to effectively lead a patrol squad. The candidate must have working knowledge of Virginia Code, university policies and procedures, and the University of Mary Washington Police Department's policies and procedures. The candidate must be familiar with Jean Cleary and and the reporting requirements of the act.

 

Required Education:

Current certification as a Law Enforcement Officer by the Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS); Must have extensive experience as a sworn police officer, with a demonstrated ability to supervise others.

Additional Considerations:

KSAs
The Sergeant should have basic level leadership training and, once promoted, continue to pursue leadership training at the regional academy. The candidate must be a field training officer or be willing to become one within a reasonable amount of time of accepting the position.
