Job Summary/Basic Functions

The University of Mary Washington has an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Senior Accountant. This position supports the financial operations of the institution by independently performing complex accounting and reconciliation functions in accordance with institutional policies, state and federal regulations, and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). The role prepares and maintains advanced Excel-based cost distribution tools, analyzes financial transactions for accuracy and compliance, and completes monthly cost distributions and uploads to automated accounting system. The position researches and resolves discrepancies, prepares correcting entries, internal transfers, and budget adjustments, and ensures the integrity of financial data through detailed review and reconciliation. Responsibilities include reconciling bank accounts and payment systems, managing electronic financial data transmissions, preparing required tax filings, and responding to departmental inquiries related to expenses and revenues. The role collaborates closely with accounting, finance, budget and purchasing offices; delivering accurate and timely financial services to support the University's mission and campus community.

Required KSAs/Competencies/Qualifications

  • Strong computer proficiency, including advanced skills in Excel

  • Thorough knowledge of general accounting principles and practices

  • Exceptional attention to detail

  • Well-developed analytical and problem-solving abilities

  • Ability to independently analyze complex financial transactions

  • Experience performing detailed financial research and account reconciliations

  • Ability to identify, investigate, and resolve financial discrepancies, including bank, payment, and credit card reconciliations

  • Working knowledge of business operations

  • Strong time management and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize workload and meet deadlines

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously

  • Effective collaboration and clear communication skills

  • Strong internal and external customer service skills

  • Ability to maintain professionalism and strict confidentiality when handling sensitive financial information

 

Required Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience using automated accounting systems and maintaining accurate general ledgers
  • Experience in General Accounting

 

Additional Considerations:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related business field; or equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Experience in Higher Education. Systems experience in BANNER, Cardinal, WORKS, eVA
