Lecturer of Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry and Physics at the University of Mary Washington, a small, public liberal arts and sciences university located 50 miles south of Washington, DC, in Fredericksburg, VA, is seeking applicants for a non-tenure track, renewable-term appointment as a Lecturer to begin August 16, 2025. Applicants should have a minimum of a Masters in chemistry or a closely related field and be able to teach General Chemistry.  

Approved by the American Chemical Society (ACS), the Chemistry Program at UMW offers Bachelor of Science degrees in both Chemistry and Biochemistry, with the option to pursue ACS-certified degrees. Our program is based upon a modern curriculum and is supported by well-equipped laboratories that supplement and extend classroom instruction. Our close-knit team of ten faculty specializes in working with undergraduate students in small in-person classes and one-on-one mentoring settings. Successful applicants will demonstrate an enthusiasm for teaching at the undergraduate level, the ability to teach a variety of topics, and dedication to effective teaching and high-impact learning in an inclusive environment that embraces diverse talents and backgrounds.  

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be able to teach in-person in a student-centered small lecture and laboratory setting. The teaching load is 12 credits per semester and will include the two-semester sequence of general chemistry (with lab). The teaching load may also include the one semester Foundations of Chemistry course, the one semester general education Chemistry and Society course (with lab), and upper-level chemistry courses, depending upon the candidate’s expertise and interests and departmental needs. The successful candidate will also be responsible for the preparation of laboratory materials for the department’s 100-level laboratory-based courses, including ordering materials and weekly lab preparation. The candidate will be responsible for scheduling and supervising the student laboratory aide employees.

Faculty appointed to a renewable-term lecturer position have the same rights, privileges, and responsibilities as tenure-track faculty and are expected to contribute in the areas of teaching, professional activity, and service; tenure cannot be awarded at this rank.

Required 

  • Masters or Ph.D. in Chemistry (or one of the subdisciplines of chemistry), Chemical Education, or a closely related field, with at least 18 graduate credit hours in chemistry 
  • Ability to teach General Chemistry (lecture and lab) 

Preferred

  • Teaching experience in a secondary and/or post-secondary setting as instructor of record
  • Experience coordinating laboratories in a secondary and/or post-secondary setting 
  • Dedication to effective teaching and high-impact learning in an inclusive environment that embraces diverse talents and backgrounds
